Conservation of Mangroves
Project Statement
In
October 2005, the Hon`ble High court of Bombay passed orders directing that all
Mangroves on Government lands should be handed over to the Forest department
and notified as Forests. 18 years later, the State Government has not bothered
to comply. This resulted in 1000s of acres of Mangroves getting destroyed.
Project Intervention
Vanashakti
filed a contempt petition against the State for not complying with the order of
the Hon`ble High Court. The Hon`ble court took cognisance and issued orders to
the state to explain their conduct.
Project Outcome
Between
2022 and 2023 more than 3500 ha of Mangroves has been transferred to the state
Forest department. The matter is being pursued vigorously and it shall be
ensured that all Mangroves get the protection they deserve.
