Children and the Environment
Project Statement
Our year-round environmental education program in the Tansa Valley
stands as a pioneering initiative, focusing on fostering a profound connection
between local students and their environment. Tailored to the academic needs of
grade 5 to grade 9 students in local Marathi medium schools, our program
incorporates a meticulously designed syllabus and modules specifically attuned
to the region's geography.
Project Intervention
Vanashakti plays a pivotal role in implementing this comprehensive
educational endeavour. We administer weekly sessions
utilizing an in-house curriculum that spans grades 5 to 9. The syllabus is
thoughtfully structured: grades 5 to 7 delve into nature appreciation and the
fundamentals of natural sciences; grade 8 explores biogeography, oceanography,
soil science, animal behaviour, evolutionary biology, taxonomy,
and imparts a mini-course on the practical application of Latin; grade 9 shifts
focus to vital topics such as solid waste management, water resources
conservation, and environmental degradation with a focus on mitigation
measures.
Our intervention comprises a multifaceted approach, blending
interactive classroom sessions featuring audio-visual aids, group activities, and
hands-on projects. Outdoor sessions, including backyard ecology trails,
clean-up initiatives, and solid waste segregation, enhance the students'
practical understanding. Additionally, field visits and special vacation camps
supplement the curriculum, providing immersive experiences that deepen their
connection to environmental issues.
Project Outcome
The overarching goal of this project is to instil a sense of environmental stewardship among the students, empowering
them with the knowledge and skills necessary to address local environmental
challenges. By the program's conclusion, we anticipate heightened awareness and
understanding of ecological principles, increased civic responsibility, and an
ingrained commitment to sustainable practices. Through this innovative blend of
classroom and experiential learning, we aim to nurture a generation of
environmentally conscious citizens capable of actively contributing to the
preservation and enhancement of their local ecosystems. The measurable success
of the project will be evident in the positive behavioural changes and informed
decision-making exhibited by the participating students, thereby creating a
lasting impact on the Tansa Valley's environmental landscape.
