Mangroves in the Sewri belt adjoining the coking coal depot are under threat. The Sewri Mangrove Park was declared by the Bombay Port Trust (BPT) in 1997 with the purpose of showcasing mangroves and the Flamingo habitat. Thirty hectares of mangroves have been completely wiped out, putting the entire belt in danger of destruction. Vanashakti has investigated the issue and filed complaints with relevant government departments. Vanashakti files its intervention in the application, and it is accepted.

Hindustan Times carries a front-page story on the issue, which is seen by the Chief Justice of the Mumbai High Court. The court issues suo moto notices to the State Government. The court is apprised of the realities, and on Vanashakti's request, appoints NEERI to investigate the site and submit its report. NEERI submits its report, confirming Vanashakti's assertions. Joint site visits were conducted with government officials (FD, MCZMA, MPCB, BPT) and scientists from NEERI. NEERI submits its report, affirming Vanashakti's claim. The High Court orders BPT to relocate the coal depot.
