Coastal Road

Project Statement

The Coastal Road project aims to extend along an eleven-kilometer stretch from the inter-tidal rocky shores of Worli to Princess Street in Marine Lines, covering a significant portion of Mumbai's 34-kilometer coastline. The primary concern raised against the construction of the Coastal Road is its potential impact on Mumbai's longstanding natural heritage. The city's coastline, formed on a Deccan plateau dating back 62-68 million years, harbors rocky shores supporting approximately 344 species of intertidal marine wildlife. These species have been meticulously documented over the past two years by a citizens' collective known as the Marine Life of Mumbai.

Project Intervention

Vanashakti took legal action by approaching the Bombay High Court. The Bombay High Court responded by issuing an order that invalidated the Coastal Regulation Zone (CRZ) approval for the southern part of the Bombay Municipal Corporation.

Project Outcome

Currently, the matter is under consideration in the Supreme Court
