Inside the Kanjurmarg mangroves, a dumping ground is situated on 65 Ha of saltpan lands inside a 140 Ha boundary wall. This reclaimed land was made so by raising it to about two meters using debris and rubble and mud, and brought above the tide water level. Moreover, leachate from the garbage has seeped into the surrounding mangroves and severely affected the presence of endangered marine life, polluted the Thane Creek and left an ever-present stench in and around the tourist spot. Further expansion of the ground is sought to accommodate ever-growing waste disposal needs. This shall further eat into already reclaimed wetlands.

Vanashakti initiated correspondence and interaction with relevant govt. depts. like Environment Dept., State Forest Dept., and State Pollution Control Board etc. A subsequent case was filed in the Bombay High Court, challenging all the subsequent environmental clearances for the Kanjurmarg Dumping ground.
